The surface of a running track is rubber. A heavy trolley is pulled onto the track and a large force acts on the rubber. State two effects that this force has on the rubber.
A spring is hung from a support with a small pan fixed to its lower end. Masses are added to the pan until the spring is stretched well beyond the limit of proportionality. On Fig. 2.2, sketch the extension-load graph for the spring and label the limit of proportionality P.
The masses are then taken away and the spring’s extension falls. Suggest what is observed when all the masses have been removed.
