Elastic deformation — practice question

(a)[2]

The surface of a running track is rubber. A heavy trolley is pulled onto the track and a large force acts on the rubber. State two effects that this force has on the rubber.

(b(i))[2]

A spring is hung from a support with a small pan fixed to its lower end. Masses are added to the pan until the spring is stretched well beyond the limit of proportionality. On Fig. 2.2, sketch the extension-load graph for the spring and label the limit of proportionality P.

(b(ii))[1]

The masses are then taken away and the spring’s extension falls. Suggest what is observed when all the masses have been removed.
