Thermal expansion of solids, liquids and gases — practice question

Metal, water and air, each with the same volume, are heated from 20 ^{\circ}C to 80 ^{\circ}C.
(a)[1]

State which of the metal, the water or the air expands the most.

(b)[2]

Fig. 3.1 shows the metal at 20 ^{\circ}C. It is a large square sheet with a square hole in the centre, lying flat on a table. On Fig. 3.1, sketch the outlines of the sheet and the hole after the metal is heated. The expansion should be clearly visible.

(c(i))[1]

Define density in words.

(c(ii))[2]

Calculate the volume occupied by the metal. Give the answer to a suitable number of significant figures.
