The thin rod is at right angles to the top and bottom faces of the bar magnet. Fig. 6.1 is a plan view of the bar magnet, with the N pole, the S pole and the thin rod labelled. Use Fig. 6.1 to draw the pattern and direction of the magnetic field around the bar magnet.
An electromagnet is switched on, producing a strong magnetic field around the bar magnet. Fig. 6.2 shows the direction of the strong magnetic field from the electromagnet as left to right across the page. Add arrows to Fig. 6.2 to indicate the directions of the horizontal forces acting on the poles of the bar magnet.
Describe and explain the effect on the bar magnet when the electromagnet is switched on.
