Simple magnetism and magnetic fields — practice question

Fig. 6.1 shows part of a toy containing two permanent magnets shaped as rings. A plastic rod goes through the centre of both magnets. The upper magnet can slide up and down freely on the plastic rod. The magnetic poles on the lower magnet are shown in Fig. 6.1.
(a(i))[2]

The upper magnet floats in the air above the lower magnet. On Fig. 6.1, mark the poles on the upper magnet and explain why it floats in the air above the lower magnet.

(a(ii))[2]

The top magnet is replaced by an iron ring. Explain why the iron ring sticks to the lower magnet.

(b)[2]

A current-carrying wire passes at right angles through a sheet of paper. On Fig. 6.2, draw three magnetic field lines to show the magnetic field pattern around the wire. Indicate the direction of the field on your sketch.
