Refraction of light — practice question

A student determines the refractive index $n$ of a rectangular glass block. Fig. 4.1 shows one face of the block. The student follows the route taken by a ray of light as it enters the block at side AB and leaves it at side CD.
(a)[1]

Suggest the apparatus needed to complete the task.

(b)[3]

Describe, in detail, how the student traces the light ray through the block. You may annotate Fig. 4.1 if you wish.

(c)[2]

Find the angle of incidence $i$ and the angle of refraction $r$ at the point where the light enters the glass.

(d)[2]

Using the equation $n = \frac{\sin i}{\sin r}$ for the refractive index $n$ of glass, the student repeats the experiment with rays at different values of $i$. In the space below, sketch a suitable results table for recording all the data needed to determine $n$. In your table, include the $i$ values that the student should select.
