Pressure — practice question

Fig. 3.1 shows a car tyre that has gone flat. It needs inflating.
(a(i))[2]

The flat tyre exerts a force of 1350 N on the road.\n\nThe part of the flat tyre touching the road has an area of $0.0070\,\text{m}^2$.\n\nCalculate the pressure exerted by the flat tyre on the road.

(a(ii))[1]

Air is pumped into the tyre so that it inflates, which raises the pressure inside. The force exerted by the tyre on the road remains unchanged.\n\nState how the area of the tyre in contact with the road changes.

(b(i))[1]

A particle of air inside the inflated tyre strikes the tyre wall.\n\nDefine ‘momentum’.

(b(ii))[2]

Using ideas about momentum, explain why a force acts on the wall of the tyre when the particle collides with it.

(c)[2]

As the car is moving, the temperature of the air inside the tyre rises. This temperature rise causes the air pressure to increase.\n\nUsing ideas about particles, explain why the pressure increases.
