Centre of gravity — practice question

Fig. 4.1 illustrates a cardboard lamina with three small holes and a piece of string that has a small mass fixed to one end. Together, the string and mass are known as a plumb line.

Describe an experiment, using the apparatus shown in Fig. 4.1, to determine the centre of mass of the lamina. A clamp, boss and stand and a long pin are also available for use. Your answer must include a labelled diagram.

Suggest a way to confirm the position of the centre of mass found in (a) using only a sharp pin.
