Identify the structures C, D, E and F in Fig. 2.1.

Structure D has stomata like those in the leaves. H, J, K and L are gases moving into and out of the leaves and flowers in daylight. Identify the gases H and J.

The flowers are a very pale pink colour. Suggest the identities of gases K and L. Give an explanation for your answer.

Extracts from the tree are used in medicine in many ways. Some extracts are alkaline and have anti-bacterial properties. Certain stomach problems are brought about by too much acid being produced. Suggest why these tree extracts are sometimes used to treat such stomach problems.
