Transfer of thermal energy — practice question

An engineer creates a device that takes in thermal energy from the Sun and uses it to warm water. Within the device, cold water moves slowly from an upper tank, along a white plastic pipe, to a lower tank. As it travels, energy from the Sun heats the water, as shown in Fig. 5.1. Fig. 5.1 includes the labels: upper tank, cold water, white plastic pipe, lower tank, warm water, Sun.
(a)[1]

State the instrument used to measure temperature.

(b(i))[1]

State the process that transfers thermal energy from the Sun to the white plastic pipe.

(b(ii))[1]

State the process that transfers thermal energy through the pipe’s plastic wall into the water inside the pipe.

(c)[4]

Suggest two changes he could make to increase the thermal energy absorbed. For each one, explain why your suggestion raises the thermal energy absorbed.
