Simple phenomena of magnetism — practice question
A student checks whether a bar magnet has an effect on three different materials. Fig. 9.1 shows the bar magnet together with one sample of each material A, B and C. The student examines each sample by holding each pole of the magnet close to one end of the sample. Table 9.1 records his observations.
(a)[2]
From the information in Table 9.1, join each sample to its correct property with a straight line. There should be three lines.
(b)[2]
Describe one method of making a magnet from a bar of unmagnetised steel.
(c)[2]
Describe and explain what happens as the student brings one negatively charged rod close to the other negatively charged rod.
Worked solution & mark scheme
This 6-mark question has a full step-by-step worked solution and mark scheme. One marking point: “Sample A is magnetic and magnetised; Sample B is magnetic but not magnetised; Sample C is non-magnetic” …
