Motion — practice question

A skydiver leaves an aeroplane by jumping out. She is in free fall while her parachute is still shut; later, she opens it. Fig. 1.1 shows the skydiver in free fall with her parachute closed. Fig. 1.2 shows the skydiver falling with the parachute open. Fig. 1.3 gives the speed-time graph for the skydiver’s vertical motion, from the moment she leaves the aeroplane until she lands on the ground.
(a(i))[1]

Describe the skydiver’s vertical motion from time = 0 to time = 20 s.

(a(ii))[1]

Determine the skydiver’s greatest vertical speed.

(a(iii))[1]

Determine the point A, B, C, D or E at which the skydiver opens her parachute.

(a(iv))[3]

Determine the distance travelled by the skydiver between time = 50 s and time = 80 s.

(b(i))[1]

On Fig. 1.4, place the name of the upward force on the dotted line above it.

(b(ii))[1]

Suggest a value for the upward force on the skydiver at time = 10 s.

(b(iii))[1]

Determine the value of the upward force on the skydiver at time = 30 s.

(c)[3]

Calculate the mass of the skydiver.
