Motion — practice question

Fig. 1.1 depicts a box of supplies being dropped from an aeroplane, with a parachute attached to it. The parachute opens at 6.0 s. The labels shown in Fig. 1.1 are: parachute; box containing supplies. Fig. 1.2 presents the graph of the box’s vertical speed as it falls. In Fig. 1.2, the vertical axis is labelled "speed / m s$^{-1}$" and the horizontal axis is labelled "time / s".
(a)[2]

State and explain how the kinetic energy of the box changes in the first 6.0 s of its fall.

(b)[2]

State and explain what happens to the gravitational potential energy of the box during the first 6.0 s.

(c(i))[2]

Use the graph in Fig. 1.2 to determine the speed of the object when it is moving with constant speed.

(c(ii))[1]

State the size of the resultant vertical force on the box when it is falling at constant speed.

(d)[3]

Use the graph in Fig. 1.2 to determine the distance covered by the box during the first 6.0 s.

(e)[1]

Without calculation, describe how Fig. 1.2 shows that the deceleration of the box is greater than the acceleration of the box.
