Momentum — practice question

Fig. 2.1 depicts a hammer being used to hammer a nail into a block of wood. The mass of the hammer head is $0.15\,\text{kg}$. When the hammer head strikes the nail, its speed is $8.0\,\text{m s}^{-1}$. The duration of contact between the hammer head and the nail is $0.0015\,\text{s}$. After the impact, the hammer head comes to rest.
(a)[2]

Calculate the change in momentum of the hammer head.

(b)[1]

State the impulse given to the nail.

(c)[2]

Calculate the average force acting between the hammer and the nail.

Worked solution & mark scheme
