Energy, work and power — practice question

A man raises 40 blocks onto a platform, as in Fig. 3.1. He lifts 10 blocks at a time and repeats this four times. A machine can lift all 40 blocks onto the same platform in one go, as shown in Fig. 3.2.
(a(i))[1]

State the name for the energy gained by the blocks as they are lifted onto the platform.

(a(ii))[1]

State how the energy gained by 40 blocks when lifted by the man compares with the energy gained by 40 blocks when lifted by the machine.

(b)[1]

The four situations below are described. Indicate which ones involve work being done. Place a tick (✓) in every correct box. A child is sitting at the top of the stairs. A picture is hanging on a wall. A student is stretching a spring. A person is moving a chair.

(c)[3]

Electrical appliances transfer energy, and some of the transferred energy is useful. Draw a line from each electrical appliance to the correct useful energy output. Draw only three lines. Electrical appliance: torch, radio, electric fan. Useful energy output: sound, light, chemical, kinetic.
