Transpiration — practice question

A student compared how fast water is lost from leaves at two different temperatures. Every day for seven days, the student recorded the mass of one leaf at the same time. The leaf was kept at 15 ^{\circ}C. The student then repeated this using a similar-sized leaf kept at 25 ^{\circ}C. Fig. 2.1 shows some of the apparatus that was used. The results are displayed in Fig. 2.2.
(a(i))[3]

Describe the pattern of results in Fig. 2.2.

(a(ii))[4]

Fill in the blanks to describe the process shown by the results in Fig. 2.2. Water evaporates from the surfaces of the [BLANK] cells in the leaf. The water evaporates into the [BLANK] spaces. Water vapour moves out of the leaf through the [BLANK] by diffusion. This process is called [BLANK].

(a(iii))[1]

State the name of the vessels that carry water from the roots to the leaves.

(b(i))[1]

State the name of the cell labelled X in Fig. 2.3.

(b(ii))[1]

Identify one structure that shows the cells in Fig. 2.3 are plant cells.

(c)[2]

Explain why leaves usually have a large surface area.
