Simple harmonic oscillations — practice question
A trolley moving on a smooth surface is connected to fixed blocks by springs, as illustrated in Fig. 4.1. It undergoes horizontal oscillations about its equilibrium position with amplitude $12\,\text{cm}$. Fig. 4.2 shows how the trolley’s acceleration $a$ varies with displacement $x$ from equilibrium. Friction between the trolley and the surface may be taken as negligible.
(a)[2]
Describe the features of the line in Fig. 4.2 that show the trolley is undergoing simple harmonic motion.
(b)[3]
Using Fig. 4.2, determine the period $T$ of the trolley’s oscillations.
(c(i))[1]
On the line in Fig. 4.2, place the letter $P$ at one point where the kinetic energy of the trolley is zero.
(c(ii))[1]
On the line in Fig. 4.2, mark with the letter $Q$ an approximate point where the kinetic energy of the trolley is equal to the potential energy stored in the springs.
