Rectification and smoothing — practice question

Fig. 10.1 shows a bridge rectifier made with four ideal diodes. The sinusoidal alternating electromotive force (e.m.f.) applied across points A and B has a root-mean-square (r.m.s.) value of $7.0\ \text{V}$.
(a(i))[1]

On Fig. 10.1, circle the diodes that are conducting when point B is positive relative to point A.

(a(ii))[1]

Calculate $V_{\text{MAX}}$, the maximum potential difference across resistor R.

(b)

A capacitor is added to the circuit so that the potential difference across resistor $R$ is smoothed. Fig. 10.2 shows how the potential difference $V$ across resistor $R$ varies with time $t$.

(b(i))[1]

On Fig. 10.1, draw the capacitor symbol and connect it to give smoothing.

(b(ii)1)[1]

State the effect, if any, on the ripple magnitude on $V$ when a capacitor with larger capacitance is used.

(b(ii)2)[1]

State the effect, if any, on the ripple magnitude on $V$ when resistor $R$ has a smaller resistance.
