Progressive waves — practice question

Two progressive water waves X and Y move along a straight line from point A to point B. Fig. 3.1 shows how the displacement of the waves varies with distance from A at one instant.
(a)[1]

State the maximum displacement of wave X from equilibrium.

(b(i))[2]

Both waves have a frequency of $16\ \text{Hz}$. Determine the speed of wave X.

(b(ii))[1]

State and explain whether X and Y are coherent.

(c)[2]

Wave X and wave Y superpose to produce a resultant wave. On Fig. 3.2, sketch the displacement of the resultant wave against distance from A at the instant shown in Fig. 3.1.

(d)[2]

The intensity of wave X is $I_X$. The intensity of wave Y is $I_Y$. Use Fig. 3.1 to find the ratio $\dfrac{I_X}{I_Y}$.
