Linear momentum and its conservation — practice question

Trolley A travels on a level surface at constant velocity towards trolley B, which is also moving in the same direction but at a lower constant speed. Fig. 3.1 gives the trolleys at time $t = 0$. Table 3.1 provides the trolley data. The two trolleys undergo an elastic collision and then move apart. Resistive forces are negligible. Fig. 3.2 shows how the velocity $v$ of trolley B varies with time $t$.
(a)[1]

State what the area under a velocity-time graph shows.

(b(i))[2]

Use Table 3.1 and Fig. 3.2 to determine trolley B’s acceleration during the collision.

(b(ii))[3]

Use Table 3.1 and Fig. 3.2 to determine both the magnitude and the direction of trolley A’s final velocity.

(c)[3]

On Fig. 3.2, sketch how the velocity of trolley A changes with time $t$ from $t = 0$ to $t = 0.50\,\text{s}$.
