Linear momentum and its conservation — practice question

(a)[2]

State the law of conservation of momentum.

(b)

Object A has mass $4.0\,\text{kg}$ and moves to the right at $6.0\,\text{m s}^{-1}$ along a horizontal frictionless surface. It is heading towards a second object B of mass $2.0\,\text{kg}$, which is travelling in the same direction as A at $3.0\,\text{m s}^{-1}$, as shown in Fig. 4.1. Object A collides with object B. The two objects join together and move away with velocity $v$. Calculate:

(b(i))[2]

the value of velocity $v$.

(b(ii))[2]

the proportion of the two objects’ total initial kinetic energy that is transferred to other forms of energy during the collision.
