Equations of motion — practice question

(a)[2]

Complete Fig. 1.1 by showing whether acceleration, speed, and power are vectors or scalars.

(b)

A ball is projected horizontally at $1.1\,\text{m s}^{-1}$ from point A at the edge of a table, as shown in Fig. 1.2. It reaches horizontal ground at point B, which is $0.43\,\text{m}$ from the foot of the table. Air resistance is negligible.

(b(i))[1]

Calculate the time taken for the ball to travel from A to B.

(b(ii))[2]

Use your answer to (b)(i) to find the height of the table.

(b(iii))[2]

At $t = 0$, the ball leaves the table. For the motion between A and B, sketch graphs on Fig. 1.3 to show how, with time $t$, (1) the acceleration $a$ of the ball changes, and (2) the vertical component $s_v$ of the displacement of the ball from A changes. Numerical values are not required.

(c)[1]

A ball of greater mass is projected from the table at the same velocity as the ball in (b). Air resistance remains negligible. State and explain what effect, if any, the increased mass has on the time taken for the ball to reach the ground.
