Energy in simple harmonic motion — practice question

(a)[2]

What is meant by simple harmonic motion?

(b)[3]

A horizontal plate vibrates up and down, as shown in Fig. 3.1. The plate performs simple harmonic motion with a frequency of $4.5\,\text{Hz}$ and amplitude $3.0\,\text{mm}$. A metal cube of mass $5.8\,\text{g}$ is resting on the plate. Calculate, for the cube, the energy of oscillation.

(c(i))[2]

The amplitude of oscillation of the plate in (b) is increased slowly. The frequency stays the same. At a certain amplitude, the cube just loses contact for an instant with the plate. State the position of the plate in its oscillation at the instant when the cube loses contact.

(c(ii))[2]

Calculate the amplitude of oscillation.
