Sampling and estimation — practice question
Within a group of students, $\frac{3}{4}$ are male. Among the male students, the proportion who enjoy their curry hot is $\frac{3}{5}$, while for the female students the proportion who enjoy their curry hot is $\frac{4}{5}$. A student is selected at random.
(i)[4]
Find the probability that the student chosen is female, or prefers their curry hot, or is both female and prefers their curry hot.
(ii)[2]
Using working, determine whether the events ‘the student chosen is male’ and ‘the student chosen likes their curry hot’ are independent.
Worked solution & mark scheme
This 6-mark question has a full step-by-step worked solution and mark scheme. One marking point: “A correct intersection probability such as $P(M \cap H)=\frac{3}{4}\times\frac{3}{5}=\frac{9}{20}$, or an equivalent result, is shown” …
