Representation of data — practice question

A circular body is made from a uniform semicircular lamina weighing $12\text{ N}$ together with a uniform semicircular arc weighing $8\text{ N}$. Both the lamina and the arc have centre $O$ and radius $0.6\text{ m}$, and they are connected at the ends of their shared diameter $AB$. The body is freely suspended from a fixed point at $A$, with $AB$ set at $30^\circ$ to the vertical. It is in equilibrium and is subject to a horizontal force of size $F\text{ N}$ acting at the lowest point of the body, in the plane of the body.
(i)[3]

Prove that the centre of mass of the object is at $O$.

(ii)[3]

Calculate $F$.

Worked solution & mark scheme

This 6-mark question has a full step-by-step worked solution and mark scheme. One marking point: Writes and applies the moments equation, e.g. $(12+8)OG = \pi\,[8\times 0.6/(\pi/2)-12\times(2\times 0.6)/(3\pi/2)]$
