Representation of data — practice question
A small block $B$ of mass $0.2\,\text{kg}$ is set at a fixed point $O$ on a smooth horizontal surface. A horizontal force of magnitude $0.42\,\text{N}$ acts on $B$. At time $t\,\text{s}$ after the force is first applied, the velocity of $B$ away from $O$ is $v\,\text{m s}^{-1}$.
(i)[2]
Determine the value of $v$ when $t = 1$.
(ii)[3]
For $t > 1$ a further force, of magnitude $0.32\,\text{N}$ and acting towards $O$, is added to $B$. The force of magnitude $0.42\,\text{N}$ continues to act as before. Find the value of $v$ when $t = 2$.
(iii)[3]
For $t > 2$ a third force, of magnitude $0.06t^2\,\text{N}$ and acting away from $O$, is added to $B$. The other two forces continue to act as before. Show that the velocity of $B$ is the same when $t = 2$ and when $t = 3$.
Worked solution & mark scheme
This 8-mark question has a full step-by-step worked solution and mark scheme. One marking point: “Apply Newton’s Second Law, together with $v = u + at$, to obtain $0.2a = 0.42$” …
