Polymerisation — practice question

(a)[1]

The table contains three pairs of monomers that can undergo polymerisation. Fill in the table by naming the type of polymerisation for each pair.

(b(i))[3]

$2$-aminopropanoic acid, $\text{CH}_3\text{CH(NH}_2\text{)CO}_2\text{H}$, is able to polymerise under suitable conditions. No second monomer is used in this reaction. Draw a section of the polymer chain formed that contains three monomer residues. Make one repeat unit clear on your diagram.

(b(ii))[2]

$2$-aminopropanoic acid, $\text{CH}_3\text{CH(NH}_2\text{)CO}_2\text{H}$, has two stereoisomers. Use three-dimensional diagrams to show the two stereoisomers of $2$-aminopropanoic acid. State the type of stereoisomerism shown.

(c(i))[1]

The skeletal formula of compound W is shown. When W is mixed with a second compound, known as a hardener, a polymerisation reaction takes place, giving a non-solvent-based adhesive. State the name of this type of non-solvent-based adhesive.

(c(ii))[1]

The hardener is a diamine. In a diamine, the alkyl chain carries two amine groups that are not attached to the same carbon atom. Draw the structural formula of a compound that could act as a suitable hardener.
