Analytical techniques — practice question

Compound $\text{C}$ has the molecular formula $\text{C}_7\text{H}_{14}\text{O}$. When hot concentrated acidified $\text{KMnO}_4(\text{aq})$ is used to treat $\text{C}$, two products are formed, $\text{D}$, $\text{C}_4\text{H}_8\text{O}$, and $\text{E}$, $\text{C}_3\text{H}_4\text{O}_3$. The table presents the outcomes of four tests carried out on these three compounds.
(a(i))

State the functional group which $\text{Br}_2(\text{aq})$ tests for.

(a(ii))

State the functional group which $\text{Na}(\text{s})$ tests for.

(a(iii))

State the functional group which $\text{I}_2(\text{aq}) + \text{OH}^-(\text{aq})$ tests for.

(a(iv))[4]

State the functional group which 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine tests for.

(b)[2]

Using the results of the tests above, suggest structures for compounds $\text{D}$ and $\text{E}$.

(a)[4]

State the functional groups tested by the following reagents: (i) $\text{Br}_2\text{(aq)}$ (ii) $\text{Na(s)}$ (iii) $\text{I}_2\text{(aq)} + \text{OH}^-\text{(aq)}$ (iv) 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine.

(c)[3]

Compound C is present as two stereoisomers. Draw the structural formula for each isomer, and state the type of stereoisomerism involved.
