Transport mechanisms — practice question

Fig. 5.1 shows a photomicrograph of a longitudinal section through part of a plant stem. A scientist investigated how leaf temperature affects the rate of transpiration from leaves of the wheat plant, Triticum aestivum. The investigation was then repeated with the cotton plant, Gossypium hirsutum. Table 5.1 presents the results. Nematodes are microscopic animals that infect many economically important crop plants, including cotton plants.
(a(i))[1]

Name one substance that is transported in T in Fig. 5.1.

(a(ii))[1]

State the name of the substance that makes the spiral thickening around the structure labelled T in Fig. 5.1.

(b(i))[3]

Suggest explanations for the relationship between leaf temperature and the rate of transpiration of T. aestivum shown in Table 5.1.

(b(ii))[1]

Suggest one structural difference between the leaves of T. aestivum and the leaves of G. hirsutum that could explain the results shown in Table 5.1.

(c(i))[1]

When root cells are infected, the nematodes disrupt the plant mitotic cell cycle. As a result, a special feeding cell called cell G is formed in the plant, and the nematodes obtain nutrients from it. Cell G develops after several cell cycles occur with no cytokinesis. Suggest how cell G differs from cells produced during a mitotic cell cycle that has not been disrupted by a nematode.

(c(ii))[1]

Nematodes can also trigger a process called endoreplication. In this process, a plant cell passes through several S phases in one cell cycle without entering mitosis or carrying out cytokinesis. State how the nucleus of a cell that has undergone endoreplication may differ from the nucleus of a cell in the same plant that has not been affected by the nematode.
