Respiration — practice question

(a)[6]

Outline how glycolysis occurs in a mammalian cell.

(b)[3]

In a mammalian cell, ATP may be generated by several routes, such as: • substrate level phosphorylation during the Krebs cycle • oxidative phosphorylation. Table 7.1 shows a comparison of the two processes. Finish Table 7.1. Put a tick ($\checkmark$) where the statement is true and a cross ($\times$) where it is false. The first row has already been completed for you.

(c)[6]

An investigation was done to find the RQ values of germinating maize seeds. • One sample of maize seeds was placed in water for one hour. • The mean RQ value of some of these seeds was then determined and the rest of the seeds were planted in soil. • After 12 hours, the mean RQ value of some of the seeds in the soil was determined. • The remaining seeds were left to germinate and develop into seedlings. • After 21 days, the mean RQ value of some of the seedlings was determined. Table 7.2 gives the results of the investigation. Suggest an explanation for each of the RQ values shown in Table 7.2. • seeds soaked in water • seeds after 12 hours in the soil • seedlings after 21 days
