Chlorophyll $a$ is the main photosynthetic pigment in plants. Describe the function of the other photosynthetic pigments present in plant chloroplasts.

The absorption of different wavelengths of light by chloroplast pigments may be shown as an absorption spectrum. Fig. 8.2 presents an absorption spectrum for an extract of chloroplast pigments and an absorption spectrum for whole chloroplasts. Using Fig. 8.2, describe the differences between the two spectra and suggest reasons for the differences.
