Investigation of limiting factors — practice question

Leaves of tobacco plants, Nicotiana sp., contain chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b in their chloroplasts.
(a)[2]

Describe the part played by chlorophyll b in photosynthesis.

(b)

A mutant tobacco plant was discovered to contain a greater amount of chlorophyll b than normal tobacco plants. An investigation was carried out to measure the photosynthesis rate of normal and mutant tobacco plants at increasing light intensities. Oxygen production rate was used as the measure of photosynthesis. Other variables were kept constant. Fig. 9.1 gives the results of this investigation.

(b(i))[3]

Describe the pattern shown in Fig. 9.1.

(b(ii))[4]

It was noticed that the mutant tobacco plants had a faster growth rate than the normal tobacco plants. Suggest explanations for this observation.
