Classification — practice question

The kakapo, Strigops habroptila, is a large parrot that is nocturnal, meaning it is active at night, and it occurs only in New Zealand. This bird cannot fly and lives on the ground. On the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, the kakapo is classified as critically endangered. Fig. 7.1 shows a kakapo.

Before humans arrived in New Zealand, the kakapo had a wide distribution. The Kakapo Recovery Programme began in 1995, and the birds were moved to protected areas. By 2024, they were found only in these protected areas, as shown in Fig. 7.2. Suggest the ideal features of a protected area for the kakapo.

(c)[4]

DNA has shown that the kakapo population may have passed through one or more genetic bottlenecks after humans arrived in New Zealand. Suggest the consequences of a genetic bottleneck to the kakapo population in New Zealand.
