Biodiversity — practice question

(a)[3]

Explain what the term biodiversity means.

(b(i))[3]

Simpson’s Index of Diversity ($D$) is one way of measuring biodiversity. The formula for Simpson’s Index of Diversity is $D = 1 - \left( \sum \left( \frac{n}{N} \right)^2 \right)$, where $n$ is the number of individuals of each species found in the sample and $N$ is the total number of individuals of all species. In a study of pond biodiversity, pond animals were collected with sampling nets. Each animal was identified to species and the number of individuals of each species was counted. Table 8.1 gives the findings of the investigation. Calculate Simpson’s Index of Diversity by completing Table 8.1 in the spaces provided. Write your answers to three decimal places. Put the value for Simpson’s Index of Diversity on the dotted line. Give your answer to three decimal places.

(b(ii))[2]

Explain what this Simpson’s Index of Diversity value tells you about the pond’s diversity.
